Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR) is well connected to all of Mexico, the USA, & Canada. There are multiple Puerto Vallarta airport transportation options including taxis, Uber pickups, a shuttle, or private airport transfer. Below are all our suggestions for the best way to get from Puerto Vallarta airport to your hotel or vacation rental, without paying high transportation prices or getting scammed.
Puerto Vallarta Airport Transportation Options
After landing and going through customs, you’ll be bombarded by people trying to sell you tours, timeshares, and transportation. Politely say, “No Gracias” and keep on walking.
Below are the PVR airport transportation options we suggest: Puerto Vallarta airport taxi rates, Uber pickup, rental car options, and private airport transfer prices.
PVR Airport Taxi Rates 2024
Taxis are not metered. Instead, you pay by zones (see the Puerto Vallarta taxi fare zones map below). Puerto Vallarta airport taxi rates are slightly above average due to the fees that the federal government charges them to be licensed and to work out of the airport. You can purchase a taxi voucher near the terminal exit for a regular sedan or private minivan. Tips are not required unless you feel it is warranted. Regular city taxis are not allowed to pick up passengers at the airport (since they do not pay for the license), but they are allowed to drop passengers off at the airport.

Airport Shuttle
Start out your trip comfortably and conveniently by booking a shared, round-trip airport shuttle. Avoid the long taxi lines and confusing public transport systems with this shuttle service that includes:
- Comfortable air-conditioned vehicle
- Bilingual and professional drivers
- Bottled water included
When exiting the terminal, just look for your Puerto Vallarta airport transfer representative who will be holding a sign with your name and their logo. They’ll help you load your luggage and drive you to your hotel or vacation rental in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. Round-trip PVR airport shuttle prices range between $25 – $40 USD, depending on the zone of your drop-off location (see map below to see if you are Zone 1-4).
Private Airport Transfers
This is the easiest, quickest, safest, and most hassle-free transportation option from the Airport. Feel like a celebrity as you step into prearranged Puerto Vallarta Airport transportation to your vacation rental or hotel. All PVR airport transfers and shuttle services are private and will be waiting for you when you arrive.
- 1-16 passengers: Choose between a sedan, a private minivan / Suburban, or an extra-large Sprinter to fit more people and luggage.
- Air-conditioned vehicles
- Pre-paid, so there is no haggling or stress
- Professional & courteous drivers
When exiting the terminal, just look for your Puerto Vallarta airport transfer representative who will be holding a sign with your name and their logo. They’ll help you load your luggage and drive you straight to your vacation rental in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle.
We highly recommend booking with any of the 6 companies below. Their transportation options include Suburbans, private minivans, or Mercedes Sprinters for larger groups of people. They can also accommodate any special requirements you may have (baby seats, wheelchair accessibility, or luggage such as surfboards or fishing rods). Click the links below to get an instant quote.
Ridesharing Apps
The taxi union obviously tried to keep them out of town for as long as possible, but the ride-sharing service, Uber, became available in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit back in June 2017.
You can probably save between 20-30% of your PVR airport taxi rate by walking across the pedestrian bridge, which is also the Uber pickup spot (see PVR airport map below). City taxis are generally waiting in front of the Tacón de Marlin restaurant that is just on the other side of the bridge (if you are hungry, GET THE SMOKED MARLIN BURRITO HERE!), and the Uber pick-up location is very closeby as well.
Uber pickup is a great PVR airport transportation option, but it is a little more of a hassle. As mentioned above, regular taxis are not allowed to pick up passengers from the airport. Unfortunately, the same applies to Uber drivers. There is a work-around though: a quick walk over the pedestrian bridge to the other side of the highway solves this.
Once you exit the airport, just walk left towards the highway and you’ll see the bridge. The Uber app will also help you find the pick-up zone. Below is a map of how to find the pedestrian bridge and reach the Puerto Vallarta airport uber pickup spot.
Due to Uber’s high commission rates, another app called InDriver has become very popular as well. If you open up your Uber app and see that there are very few cars in your area, this may be why! Most drivers have now switched over to this InDriver app, and it is now the most reliable ride-sharing app in the area.
Both ride-sharing apps have the same pickup spot and they are great options for getting around town, checking out other parts of the bay, or for going back to the airport as well. Uber will work fine in the Puerto Vallarta area, but Indriver will be much more reliable in the Riviera Nayarit area.
Note: Some users have said they could not find the app, so they had to switch the App Store country settings to Mexico temporarily to download the inDriver app.
Just keep in mind that you will have to cross over the pedestrian bridge with all your luggage. It works out nicely if you are traveling light with only your carry-on luggage, but if you have a lot of baggage, it may be worth paying a little extra to grab a taxi right outside the terminal. See the Puerto Vallarta airport map below to see where to go after customs & immigration to reach the pedestrian bridge.
Airport Car Rental
Renting your own car will give you freedom to go wherever you want on your own schedule. Although there are many Puerto Vallarta car rental companies, we highly suggest using the following companies due to their amazing customer service and prices:
Gecko Rent a Car
Gecko Rent a Car is a very popular car rental company. It’s a local company based in Bucerias and they are known for the best customer service you can imagine with honest prices. No bait & switch or any of the typical up-sell tricks from other rental car companies. The price is all-inclusive of insurances and it is a very fair deal. Their inventory includes sedans, minivan rentals, and more! They also offer airport pick-ups and drop-offs.
We have personally rented one of their Toyota minivans and a few of their sedans, and we have always had an amazing experience with them.
City Car Rental
City Car Rental is a Mexican company with locations in Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Los Cabos, and of course Puerto Vallarta. Our personal experience with them has been that they have great rates and no hidden prices, ensuring the best possible car rental experience.
Public Transport & Bus Routes
Although there are no shared PVR airport shuttles, public transport and the bus system in Puerto Vallarta can be very inexpensive. It can also be a bit daunting if you don’t speak any Spanish and are not accustomed to traveling on buses and metro systems… but there is no need to be afraid of the city buses!
If you are a budget-conscious traveler and you aren’t afraid of a little adventure, you can get all around the bay at an extremely affordable price. If you are coming from or going to the airport and have a bunch of luggage, it is probably best to take a taxi or Uber since buses don’t have racks and may be crowded.
The buses stop right outside the terminal on the highway that goes straight towards Puerto Vallarta (south) or cross the pedestrian bridge to grab a bus heading North towards Nuevo Vallarta, Bucerias, Sayulita, and more. If you feel lost, ask a local or the bus driver and they’ll be able to help out!
