If you have a few extra days and want to explore more of what the region has to offer, you’ve found the right article! Day trips can be unique experiences but can be tough to plan if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Luckily, we’ve done all the research and have personally been to all these destinations so we could give you the best possible information. Here are our 5 favorite day trips from Puerto Vallarta that anyone with an extra day or two should consider!
San Sebastian del Oeste
Take a day away from the beaches of Puerto Vallarta and enjoy a glimpse into colonial Mexican history! Scenic countryside, the charm of a traditional town, a rich history, and welcoming locals make San Sebastián del Oeste an excellent day trip and tour for Puerto Vallarta vacationers. Also, you’ll get to try Raicilla, an agave spirit that is only produced in this region of Jalisco.
Colomitos
If you’re looking for a great local beach trip, head to Boca de Tomatlán and hike or grab a boat to Colomitos. It’s about 45min south of Puerto Vallarta, so get an early start. The drive alone is beautiful, but once you arrive on the beach you will be floored by one of Mexico’s most beautiful beaches. With white sand and blue water it’s easy to spend all day here getting a tan and snorkeling in crystal clear waters. There is an amazing hike that starts from Boca de Tomatlan, passes through Colomitos, and ends in Las Animas.
Tequila
If you have some extra time in town for a day trip, you may want to consider taking the ultimate Puerto Vallarta tequila tour: actually going to Tequila, Jalisco! In the area around the town of Tequila, Jalisco, greenish blue fields of Agave stretch out kilometer after kilometer over the rugged, hilly terrain which has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Our favorite tequila haciendas and distilleries were:
- Hacienda Herradura
- Fábrica La Rojeña (Jose Cuervo)
- La Cofradia
- Hacienda La Fortaleza
San Pancho
If you’re looking for a quieter, more relaxing beachside escape, look no further than San Pancho. While it doesn’t have as much to offer by way of restaurants and nightlife as some of its neighboring towns, you can definitely spend an entire week or more in San Pancho without getting bored. The beaches are gorgeous (and even better if you travel north on a boat), and there are plenty of things to do inland if you want to avoid beach days altogether. It is also a great place for surfing!
Barra de Navidad
If you’re looking for a quieter, more traditional coastal town to visit while you’re in Puerto Vallarta, check out Barra de Navidad, 4 hours south of Puerto Vallarta. A long wooden pier runs through Barra de Navidad and is lined with restaurants where you can try fresh seafood and authentic Mexican cuisine.
