The name “Bucerías” derives from the Spanish word “buzo,” meaning “diver,” reflecting the town’s historical connection to oyster diving. Every Easter weekend is the Annual Bucerias Oyster Festival at the beach in front of the downtown area, next to the Arroyo del Indio river outlet. It is a free event for the general public to celebrate with the local oyster divers at the end of the extraction season, which coincides with the closing of the Holy Week and Easter holiday period. The government (in 2023) announced that approximately 20,000 people per day are expected to attend.

The event offers live music by the Municipal Orchestra, and other local bands that play salsa, cumbia, and norteñas. There are other events programmed throughout the day including contests, a beauty pageant, and of course all the free food.

In 2022, this included:

  • 500 kg of ceviche
  • 5000 oysters

On April 8-9, 2023 this included:

  • 550 kg of ceviche
  • 9000 oysters

As you can see, not only oysters are offered at the festival. At some of the many food stalls, you can also find fish prepared in various ways, as well as shrimp, mollusks, and other seafood options. One of the most requested dishes in the Riviera Nayarit is Zarandeado-style fish, which we highly recommend!
