Below are some of the best weekly Puerto Vallarta markets, shopping spots, stores, & boutiques. Some of the markets only open on specific days of the week, and some only open during the high season (November – April), so make sure to plan out your week!
Cuale River Artisan Flea Market
This is really where you can shop ’til you drop. The craft flea market hosts dozens of stalls that sell both traditional Mexican items and souvenirs to take home and remember your vacation by. There is a wide array of beautiful glass pieces and clay crafts painted in bright colors that are worth checking out. Prices are very affordable. The market follows Cuale River which separates Dowtown from the Romantic Zone. Make sure to cross over the rope bridge for a little extra fun!
To add some extra fun to your Puerto Vallarta shopping experience, put your bargaining skills to the test! Haggle with vendors on a dizzying array of items such as shot glasses, t-shirts, and other small souvenirs. There is also a nice variety of unique home decor such as masks, paintings, and other wall hangings. Talavera pottery is another favorite that can be found at the flea market in a variety of forms from dishware and serving bowls to house numbers and kitchen accessories.
El Malecon
A favorite pastime of locals and tourists alike is to stroll along El Malecon, Puerto Vallarta’s boardwalk in the heart of downtown. In addition to all the shops and boutiques, it is full of restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and street food vendors.
The shopping here offers a wide range of products including upscale swimwear, leather goods, high-end jewelry, trinkets, and souvenirs. Don’t miss the chance to step into one of the galleries that feature locally made, one-of-a-kind Huichol works of art that sell products from vibrant wall hangings to intricately beaded figurines.
On the Beach
While it can become a bit irritating if you truly have no desire to buy anything, beach vendors travel up and down the beach offering their goods to just about everyone. If you are in the mood for shopping, the great news is that you can lounge on the beach and have the shopping come to you! They sell a little of everything such as silver jewelry, beach dresses, sunglasses, hats, home decorations, cigars, and more.
Marina Vallarta
Walk around the boardwalk to see all the boats, and there are tons of little restaurants to choose from. Thursday they have a great outdoor market for shopping.
Old Town Shopping
There is a huge variety of unique stores and galleries along the Malecon and Old Town. Tasco is the leading producer of silver in the country, and there are tons of shops that sell very high-quality silver jewelry at a great price. Avoid the metal jewelry that beach vendors may be trying to sell you along the way. If you are into art, the local indigenous tribe sells their very unique art. The style is called Huichol art, and Vallarta has some of the best collections in Mexico.
Romantic Zone
This area is up-and-coming, and it features high-end boutiques, art galleries, fashionable bars, and hip restaurants. There is a little bit for everyone. It is becoming a bustling ex-pat and LGBT community, so prices may be a little higher than the rest of the city. The beach in the Romantic Zone is also one of the best, so after shopping, you can grab a margarita at one of the many beach bars and take a sunset beach walk to Los Muertos Pier.
Galerias Mall
If you are looking for a more typical mall setting, check out Galerias Vallarta. It is a huge modern shopping mall with a great selection of all types of retail stores. There are lots of great stores, but definitely not cheap ones. Liverpool is the biggest store there and definitely worth checking out. Most employees speak perfect English which makes things a lot easier for tourists!
This is especially true since it is close to the cruise ship port, so they cater mostly to international customers. There is a pretty decent food court where you can find all sorts of restaurants. Also, they have large underground parking, making it very easy to get to.
