Amigos de Bucerias: Volunteer Opportunities & Recycling Program

Amigos de Bucerias is a civil association composed of energetic Bucerias residents who have joined together to help make our town a better place to live, work, and visit. It is a non-profit for many local causes, including:

  • The Recycling program (plastic & aluminum)
  • Beach Cleanups
  • Paws & Claws
  • The Special Needs Fund
  • The Street Light program for repairing street lights and purchasing all the replacement bulbs in town.

Read on below to learn more about Amigos de Bucerias and discover how to volunteer in Bucerias.

About Amigos de Bucerias A.C.

Barry Munro & Jerry Knapp started the program back in October 2006 and within 5 years the team had collected 162 tons of plastic. The program is still running strong today.

The mission is to help protect resources, empower sustainable action, and improve our community. Their current projects are:

  • The Recycling Program
  • Trash cans and general street beautification
  • John Ozello Memorial Food Bank
  • Spay n Neuter
  • Special Needs
  • Tercera Edad (Seniors facility)

Amigos de Bucerias also helps support other local charities such as the BBCC community center, the Rey Nayar Library, Investours, and the Manos de Amor Orphanage.

Whether you are coming to Bucerias for a couple of weeks, a few of months, or if you live here permanently, you can play an important role in helping the community! We think that more people would get involved if they just knew how. Learn how you can help below:

The Recycling Program

The recycling crew picks up all the large chicken-wire baskets that have been installed all around Bucerias… you have probably seen some of them! If you see any of us in the recycling pickup truck around town, make sure to say “Hola Amigos!!

Volunteers help one day per week from 8 am to 11 am. The pickup schedule is the following:

  • Every Monday on the beachside of the highway.
  • Every Wednesday on the Southside of the Arroyo on the east side of the highway.
  • Every Thursday on the Northside of the Arroyo on the east side of the highway, including Los Amores & Terralta.

All the proceeds go directly to one of the many projects or associated charities. For example, the Street Light program is 100% funded by the recycling program which helps repair broken street lights and replaces any burnt-out bulbs.

Did you know:

  • Approximately 60% of the trash we produce could actually be recycled.
  • While the local government provides trash services to our city, no recycling services are provided or funded by the government.
  • The AdB Recycling services are free to the community!

The Recycling Compound

They recently had to relocate the recycling compound, and it is now located 3 blocks off of Estaciones, on Hereida street (on the left). This is where everyone now meets to start their volunteering shifts.

Amigos de Bucerias would like to thank Eden Nursery and owner Dave Velasco for all his support for the past 14 years!

A few days worth of recycling, and all the plastic is sorted into jumbo-sized bags.

Previous Recycling Programs

To see how much the recycling program has grown over the years, here is the monthly number of jumbo trash bags that have been gathered (we are using February in this example):

  • February 2020: 638 bags
  • February 2019: 541 bags
  • February 2018: 472 bags
  • February 2017: 449 bags
  • February 2016: 297 bags

To compare the total annual weights over the years:

  • 2016 Plastic Collected: 30,060 kg
  • 2017 Plastic Collected: 29,920 kg
  • 2018 Plastic Collected: 36,810 kg

Bucerias Recycling Fundraiser

The fundraising campaign is to help pay off a tow vehicle for the Bucerias recycling program. The vehicle helps them out greatly with all the daily duties. If you’d like to help, you can donate and earmark your donation to the vehicle fund.
